الْقُرْآنَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ(
[And We have indeed
made the Qur'ân easy to understand and remember; then is there anyone who
will remember (or receive admonition)?] al Qamr [54:17]

“What
earth will hold me and what heaven will protect me if I say something
concerning the Book of Allaah which I do not know.”
Saying
of Abu Bakr (y). See ‘An Introduction to the
Principles of Tafseer’, Ibn Taymiyyah. P61.

“Verily,
among the acts of venerating Allaah, are honouring the elderly Muslims, the
one in authority and the one who has memorized the Qur’aan who avoids going
to extremes with it or who neglects it.”
(Abu
Dawood 4843).

“The
Reciter of the Qur’aan should be known to stay awake at night when the people
are sleeping; by his day when the people are awake, and by his tears when the
people are laughing and by his silence when the people are engaging in
useless talk and by his humbleness when the people act arrogantly.”
Saying
by Ibn Mas’ood (t). At Tibyaan fee Aadaab
Hamalatil Qur’aan. P43.

Du’aa
of Shaykhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah:
اللهم يا معلم آدم و إبراهيم
علمني و يا مفهم سليمان فهمني
“O Allaah, teacher of Aadam and Ibraaheem,
teach me; and Oh the One who gave Sulaymaan understanding, grant me
understanding!”

Abdullaah ibn Amr ibn al Aas (y) said that the Messenger (r) said, “Whoever stands (in
prayer and recites) 10 aayaat, will not be written down as one of those who
are negligent. And whoever stands (in prayer and recites) 100 aayaat, is
written down as being amongst those who are obedient. And whoever stands (in
prayer and recites) 1000 aayaat he will be of those who gain a huge reward.”
Saheeh Sunan Abi Daawood.
(1246) (Al Haafith said: “From Surah (Mulk) to the end of the Qur’aan is 1000
ayaat.” Saheeh at Targheeb wat Tarheeb p407)

Umar
ibn al Khattaab (y) narrated that the Messenger
of Allaah (r) said, “Whoever sleeps and
misses his portion or some of his portion of the night prayer should read it
between Salaat al Fajr and Salaat adh Dhuhr, it will be written down for him
as if he had read it at night.” (Muslim 1/515)

“The
one who has memorized the Qur’aan is carrying the flag of Islaam. It is not
befitting for him to engage in useless pastimes with those who engage in
useless pastimes, nor to be negligent with those who are negligent, nor to
engage in useless talk with those who engage in useless talk. This comes out
of respecting and exalting the rights of the Qur’aan.” Saying by Fudayl ibn Iyaad (t). ‘At Tibyaan fee Aadaab
Hamalatil Qur’aan.’ P44.

Aa’ishah
(y) narrated that the Messenger
of Allaah (r) said, “Allaah loves that
if one of you does something, he does it well.” (Silsilah al Ahaadeeth as
Saheehah. No. 1113).

The
Correct Belief Regarding the Qur’aan. “Furthermore, included in the belief in
Allaah and His Books, is the belief that the Qur’aan is the Word of Allaah,
revealed and not created. It began from Him and unto Him it will return.
Allaah truly spoke the words of the Qur’aan. The Qur’aan that was revealed
upon Muhammad r is truly the word of Allaah and not the
words of any other. It is not permissible to generally say that it is a
narrative or representation of the words of Allaah. If the people recite the
words of Allaah or write it in books, then that does not exclude it from
being the true words of Allaah. Speech is rightfully attributed to the one
who said it initially and not to the one who conveys it. The Qur’aan is the
words of Allaah, both in its letters and meanings. The letters without the
meaning or the meaning without the letters are not the words of Allaah.” (Shaykh Muhammad Saalih al
Uthaymeen’s Notes on al Aqeedah al Waasitiyyah. Translated by Shakiel
Humayun. 2004. p40)

“….the
best of what I have seen regarding knowledge is that if a person memorizes
something in the day, he should read it early the next morning. This will
greatly help him to memorize what he memorized the day before. This is
something that I myself have done and it really helps a person to memorize.”
(Kitaab
al Ilm by Shaykh al Uthaymeen. P137).

[Verily, therein is indeed a reminder for him who has a heart or gives
ear while he is heedful.]

[O you wrapped in garments (i.e. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him))!
Stand (to pray) all night, except a little. Half of it or a little less than
that, Or a little more. And recite the Qur'ân (aloud) in a slow, (pleasant
tone and) style. Verily, We shall send down to you a weighty Word (i.e.
obligations, laws). Verily, the rising by night (for Tahajjud prayer) is very
hard and most potent and good for governing oneself, and most suitable for
(understanding) the Word (of Allâh).Verily, there is for you by day prolonged
occupation with ordinary duties. And remember the Name of your Lord and
devote yourself to Him with a complete devotion..] Muzzamil [73:1-8].

[We shall make you
recite (the Qur'ân), so you (O Muhammad [sal-Allâhu 'alayhi wa sallam]) shall
not forget (it), Except what Allâh may will. He knows what is apparent and
what is hidden. And We shall make easy for you (O Muhammad [sal-Allâhu
'alayhi wa sallam]) the easy way (i.e. the doing of righteous deeds).
Therefore remind (men) in case the reminder profits (them). The reminder will
be received by him who fears (Allâh)]

[Had We sent down

Huraira (t):
Allaah's Messenger (e) said, "Allah
does not listen to a prophet as He listens to a prophet who recites the
Qur'an in a pleasant tone." The companion of the sub-narrator (Abu
Salama) said, "It means, reciting it aloud.” (Bukharee vol. 6.

)وَقَالَ الرَّسُولُ

[And (remember) the
Day when the Zâlim (wrong doer, oppressor, polytheist) will bite at his
hands, he will say: "Oh! Would that I had taken a path with the
Messenger (Muhammad [sal-Allâhu 'alayhi wa sallam]). "Ah! Woe to me!
Would that I had never taken so-and-so as a Khalîl (an intimate friend)!
"He indeed led me astray from the Reminder (this Qur'ân) after it had
come to me. And Shaitân (Satan) is to man ever a deserter in the hour of
need." (Tafsir Al-Qurtubi) And the Messenger (Muhammad [sal-Allâhu
'alayhi wa sallam]) will say: "O my Lord! Verily, my people deserted
this Qur'ân (neither listened to it nor acted on its laws and teachings).
Thus have We made for every Prophet an enemy among the Mujrimûn
(disbelievers, polytheists, criminals). But Sufficient is your Lord as a
Guide and Helper. And those who disbelieve say: "Why is not the Qur'ân
revealed to him all at once?" Thus (it is sent down in parts), that We
may strengthen your heart thereby. And We have revealed it to you gradually,
in stages. (It was revealed to the Prophet in 23 years).] [al Furqaan 25:30]

Moosaa Al-Ash'ari (t) narrated that the Prophet (e) said, "The example of
him (a believer) who recites the Qur'an is like that of a citron which tastes

dissolute wicked person who recites the Qur'an is like the Raihana (sweet
basil) which smells good but tastes bitter. And the example of a dissolute
wicked person who does not recite the Qur'an is like the colocynth which

“The
first of the creation for whom the Fire will be kindled on the Day of
Resurrection are three…from them is the scholar who recited the Qur’aan in
order for it to be said that he is a reciter, and he learned knowledge in
order for it to be said that he is a scholar, and it will be said to him,
“That was said,” then the order will be given regarding him and he will be
dragged upon his face and flung into the Fire.” (Muslim no. 4688 quoted in ‘The

Samura bin Jundab (t) narrated that “Whenever the Prophet finished the (morning) prayer,
he would face us and ask, "Who amongst you had a dream last night?"
So if anyone had seen a dream he would narrate it. The Prophet would say:
"Ma sha'a-llah" (An Arabic maxim meaning literally, 'What Allah
wished,' and it indicates a good omen.) One day, he asked us whether anyone
of us had seen a dream. We replied in the negative. The Prophet said,
"But I had seen (a dream) last night that two men came to me, caught
hold of my hands, and took me to the Sacred Land (Jerusalem). ……….we went on
till we came to a man lying flat on his back, and another man standing at his
head carrying a stone or a piece of rock, and crushing the head of the Lying
man, with that stone. Whenever he struck him, the stone rolled away. The
man went to pick it up and by the time he returned to him, the crushed head
had returned to its normal state and the man came back and struck him again
(and so on). I said, 'Who is this?' They told me to proceed on;
………………………….The one whose head you saw being crushed is the one whom Allah had
given the knowledge of Quran (i.e. knowing it by heart) but he used to sleep
at night (i.e. he did not recite it then) and did not use to act upon it
(i.e. upon its orders etc.) by day; and so this punishment will go on till
the Day of Resurrection.” (Bukharee no. 1386)

Uqbah bin ‘Amir (t) narrated:
The Messenger of Allaah (e) went out while we
were in Suffah. He said: “Who amongst you wants to go everyday to Buthaan
or to ‘Aqiq, and return with two camels of big humps without cutting
blood-relationship or doing a sin?” We said: “O Messenger of Allaah, we would
all like that.” He said: “If any of
you goes to the mosque to learn (or read) two Verses of the Qur’aan, then
that is better than two big-humped she-camels, and three Verses are better
than three, four are better than four and any number of she-camels.”

‘Alee

has memorized things instead. So I asked him about the cure to help with
memorization, and he said: ‘If I tell you the cure will you use it?’ I said,
‘Yes, by Allaah I will’. He said, ‘Leave sins, for I have not experienced
anything like it for memorizing.” (Siyar A’laam an Nubulaa’. Vol. 9, p
