Rasm ‘Uthmaanee Qur’aanic Script compared to Normal Script
There is a difference between the modern
day spelling of Arabic and the Uthmaanee Arabic spelling which even native
Arabic speakers need to be aware of. The Uthmaanee spelling in the Qur'aan
differs in a few areas such as added or removed alif, waw, yaa, open taa and
the placement of the hamzahs.
Rasm ‘Uthmaanee – The ‘Uthmaanee Script -
the writing conventions and spellings at
the time of Khaleefah ‘Uthmaan رضي الله عنه (the letters and the shape of joining the letters). This
cannot be replicated from a normal Arabic keyboard. The two main published Masaahif
(copies of the Qur’aan) are ‘Mushaf Madeenah’ and ‘Mushaf Majeedee’. They both
use the ‘Uthmaanee Script however the style of their ‘fonts’ are different. Both
are acceptable.
Rasm imlaa’ee (modern standard Arabic
spelling – literally dictation script – can be typed using an Arabic keyboard).
This script should not be used to write the Qur’aan.
There are a few Arabic programmes that
you can use to insert the ‘Uthmaanee script into your document. An example is
Barnaamij ‘Aqeel found at www.saaqeel.blogspot.com.
A website called www.legacy.quran.com also can be used to
copy image files of the whole aayah. However, if you only need a part of an
aayah it is difficult to crop it correctly. This website does offer ‘with
tashkeel’ which is the rasm imlaa’ee and can be edited but it is not rasm ‘Uthmaanee.
An added point regarding the KSU ‘Ayat’
Programme. If you are searching for a word in the Qur’aan you enter it as the
rasm imlaa’ee otherwise it will not be able to search the database and gives
the message ‘no result’.
The scholars have said that it is not allowed to write the Qur'aan in
other than the Uthmaanee spelling system so as to preserve the Qur'aan.
Otherwise each generation would change the spellings according to the latest
spelling systems and the Qur'aan would be open to mistakes.
