Qur’aan Curriculum in a Private Saudi Qur’aan Primary School
Madaaris Baraa’im Attiyaab al Haafidthah al Ahliyyah
There are two programmes for memorization:
General Hifdth where students memorize the Qur'aan over 11 years which covers KG2 to Grade 9 (4 years old to 14 years old). So by the end of Primary School they will have memorized half the Qur'aan Naas to surah al Kahf and then over the next 3 years they complete the first 15 juz Surah al Baqarah to surah al Israa.
Advanced Hifdth where students memorize the Qur'aan over 8 years which covers KG2 to Grade 6 (4 years old to 11 years old).
Students then continue to revise over the Qur'aan in the following school years and finally enter the Ijaazah Programme which gives them a certificate to say that they have read the whole Qur'aan off by heart to a teacher who has an Ijaazah themselves.
(N.B Private primary schools in Saudi charge fees between
SR10-25,000 a year – approximately £2,000 GBP upwards.
Some employers contribute towards schooling fees.)

Adult Qur'aan Programmes
There are hundreds of Qur'aan centres for adults in every town and every neighbourhood. Each centre has their own programme but generally they usually follow the one below:
Hifdth, Tajweed and Islamic Studies
The centres for women usually operate only 4 days a week (Sunday to Wednesday) either morning sessions; 8am-11am or evening sessions between asr and maghrib 3.30-5pm approximately. The weekend sessions are normally on a Saturday 8-12pm once a week. The centres normally follow the academic school year but they usually start a week later in September and finish a week or two earlier to avoid the mainstream exams for the kids. This means the centre really only runs 6-7 months of the year.
In Riyadh the centres normally set 5 juz a year to learn in addition to Tajweed. So it can take 6 years to complete the whole Qur'aan. The classes are normally set according to the tajweed levels:
Level 1 Noon Saakinah and Tanween + 5 juz
Level 2 Mudood + 5 juz
Level 3 Makhaarij + 5 juz
Level 4 Waqf wal ibtidaa' + 5 juz
Fees are approximately sr300-500 (£50-60) per semester not including transport. There are two semesters per year.
Qur'aan Teacher Training
There are many centres around the country that train teachers to teach Qur'aan and there are about 6 centres in Riyadh alone.
Fees are usually about sr2000 (£300) for one year.
The courses are extremely intensive and all through the medium of Arabic so a good level of Arabic is needed to succeed by Allaah's Permission. It is also very useful if you have already memorized a good portion of Qur'aan so that it is revision and not all new hifdth. One of the conditions to enter the course is in fact that you have memorized 10 juz already).
Depending on your final level of study before entering the Institute, a student will either do a
Diploma or a Post-Graduate Diploma.
The Diploma is for school leavers who do not have a University degree. This course is over two years and they memorize the whole Qu'raan covering two and a half pages a day. This is in addition to all the other subjects which will be mentioned below.
The Post-Graduate Diploma is for University degree holders. This course is one year and they memorize half the Qur'aan from al Kahf to an Naas (15 juz). In addition to the following subjects.
Contents of both Courses:
1. Hifdth of the Qur'aan 15 or 30 juz depending on whether you do the diploma or post-graduate diploma.
2. Tajweed
3. Sciences of Qur'aan
4. Tafseer
5. Manners of the People of Qur'aan
6. Aqeedah
7. Seerah
8. Hadeeth
9. Fiqh
10. Arabic Language
11. Educational Psychology
12. Teaching Skills
13. Teaching Practice
University lecturers and Doctors from Imaam Saud University visit and teach the subjects. Graduates are given Diplomas accredited and awarded by the University.
The next level is learning the Qiraa'aat which can be done in specialized centres.
